What is a Comprehensive Plan?

A comprehensive plan serves as a blueprint for a community's development, encompassing land use strategies, public policies, and investment priorities. It offers a forward-looking perspective grounded in thorough analysis of current conditions and informed by extensive public engagement regarding the desired future trajectory of the town.

Moreover, adherence to Maine's Growth Management Act ensures that a Comprehensive Plan aligns with state regulations, unlocking access to specific grants and establishing the necessary legal framework for zoning regulations, impact fees, and various other land use ordinances. By integrating community aspirations with regulatory frameworks, these plans foster sustainable growth and enhance the overall well-being of residents.

The Process

Standish most recently updated the Comprehensive Plan in 2006. The upcoming plan will integrate updated data sources, the Town’s planning efforts since 2006, and a community engagement initiative aimed at gathering input from a wide spectrum of residents. Whether you’re a lifelong Standish resident, a recent arrival, or somewhere in between, your perspective is invaluable to this process!

Committee

The Standish Comprehensive Plan update is led by Standish town staff and the Comprehensive Plan Committee selected by the Town Council.

The project is supported by a consultant team led by North Star Planning.
